5 Reasons To Buy Pre-loved Fashion

18th May 2022

People around the world are seeking out more sustainable methods of shopping as they become aware of the severe environmental impacts of the fashion industry.

This has led to the amount of pre-loved clothes being purchased increasing rapidly year on year, but it still has a long way to go. According to WRAP £140m of clothes is still sent to landfill in the UK  each year.

There are so many benefits to buying pre-loved fashion that extend well beyond your own wardrobe. In addition to providing unique items, experimenting with your personal style and discovering bargains, it promotes a sustainable and circular future for the fashion industry.

Here are FRAME’s top 5 reasons to buy pre-loved.

1. High quality products for a cheaper price

Buying clothes pre-loved can not only save you money, but also allow you to buy better quality items.

Often you will find high quality items for a fraction of the price. It’s a common misconception that second-hand clothes for sale will be heavily worn or stained!

Many people buy items that are just worn a few times or even just once for a certain occasion that are in ‘as new’ condition.

We even get items donated here at FRAME that are brand new with tags!

2. Decrease negative impact on the environment

According to the World Economic Forum, The fashion industry is the second largest polluter of the environment

Producing clothes, especially from cotton, consumes a lot of water and energy. There is also chemicals from the pesticides used on the crops.

When buying pre-loved, you are reducing the demand for new items, and therefore reducing the use of raw materials.

In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, buying preloved clothes can reduce the pressure on biodiversity by cutting the amount of land needed for raw material production and the pollution associated with virgin fibre processing.

With a lot of clothing being made all over the world, transportation costs to the UK can have a significant impact on the environment.

3. Keeping items in circulation

Extending the active life of clothing instead of buying new is key to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, pollution, and the biodiversity impacts caused by the fashion industry.

WRAP have reported that ‘Extending the active life’ of 50% of UK clothing by 9 months would save

8% of Carbon, 10% of water and 4% of waste used per tonne of clothing.

Buying pre-loved clothing is a very straightforward and successful way to expand clothes active life, keeping you looking stylish and the items out of landfill. It’s a win win!

Another way to keep items in circulation is to use your items with care. This way, you can later resell, donate, or gift it to the next person!

4. Support a good cause

Buy pre-loved clothing at FRAME knowing that, as well as getting a bargain, your donation is going to a good cause.
