10 Funded Re-upholstery Trainee Volunteer Opportunities available at FRAME

Pembrokeshire FRAME are delighted to announce that they have received a grant of £19,999 from the WCVA Volunteering Fund towards its Project Recover.

Tackling the impact of Covid 19

Project Recover recognises the negative impact of the Covid 19 pandemic on young individuals in Pembrokeshire. Government guidelines and restrictions during the pandemic have restricted learning opportunities, reduced social interaction and for many young people this has led to reduced confidence and mental health issues.

Pembrokeshire FRAME is a reuse charity that supports individuals with learning disabilities and mental health issues. This registered charity helps to change lives and make dreams come true. Reuse projects provide support and work experience for vulnerable adults in a safe supportive environment. Our current projects include furniture upcycling, re-upholstery, gardening, customer services, administration, e-commerce, sorting, collection and delivery.

Re-upholstery Training opportunities for 10 volunteers aged 16 – 25

Thanks to this Volunteering Fund award ten lucky volunteers aged 16 – 25 will be given the chance to join FRAME’s workshop team in the FRAME Furniture Surgery for a comprehensive 6-7 month training package to learn the basics of re-upholstery and how to support individuals with learning difficulties. There will also be 5 funded places on the AET Teacher Training course at Pembrokeshire College https://www.pembrokeshire.ac.uk/product/award-in-education-training-aet-6502/ for participating volunteers who want to take their training further.

Paul Hughes, Pembrokeshire FRAME’s Chief Operating Officer said “this is a fantastic and unique opportunity for young people in Pembrokeshire to learn a traditional skill. We are hoping that once trained up some of the volunteers will be able to consider setting up their own re-upholstery business or even might look to stay on at FRAME in a paid support position, should funding become available”.

A great introduction to the basics of re-upholstery

Volunteers will gain experience in all forms of furniture preparation and repair, colour and textile selection, drawing and pattern cutting, measuring and costing, using a sewing machine to sew fabric, make piping and adding zips, re-upholstery using both modern and traditional methods and learning to support individuals with learning disabilities.

Mentoring and personal development planning support from FRAME’s amazing Re-upholstery Support Worker will all be included in the package. There will be opportunities to clock up volunteer hours with the WCVA volunteer passport scheme and the chance to acquire various volunteer benefits and awards along the training journey.

Training will commence in September 2021 and volunteers will follow a flexible programme of on the job training. Volunteers will complete their training programme by March 31st 2022.
